Mouth rinsing - Oral hygiene

Overview:

Ayurveda suggests many things for oral hygiene like Dantapavana, Danta Dhavana, Jihva nirlekhana, Nasya, Kavala, and Gandusha.

They are used for dincharya & even used as a treatment for many diseases.

Let's understand one of the procedures - gandush - mouth rinsing.

How to prepare a solution for gandush?

Take 2 grams of herbal powder for mouth rinsing and add around 100ml of hot water.

Stir it well and filter it once it is comfortably warm. Hold a small sip of the liquid in your mouth for about 30 seconds and then swish or swirl before you spit it out. Repeat this for the entire quantity.

Remember to rinse your mouth with water at the end. Use daily after brushing your teeth.

Difference between kaval & gandush:

Gandusha and kavala have similar benefits.

The main difference is in the procedure. In kavala, one must completely fill the oral cavity with liquid and swish it before spitting it out. Whereas in gandusha, as swishing is the primary intention, the oral cavity doesn't get filled completely.

Benefits of gandush - mouth rinsing:

  1. Strengthening of gums

  2. Removes oral odor

  3. Strengthening of teeth root

  4. Tongue cleaning

  5. Good salivary secretion

  6. As a treatment for aphthous ulcer.

  7. In the case of mucosal fibrosis

  8. In dental/gum bleeding

  9. To get rid of plaque
