PRADHAMAN NASYA

 

What is pradhaman nasya?

Inhaling medicinal powder through the nose is called pradhaman nasya. It’s one of the panchkarma ( 5 types of cleansing procedures) described in Ayurveda. Here we are using the dry ginger powder for pradhaman

 

How to do pradhaman nasya

Take one green gram sized amount of suth ( dry ginger powder ) on the tip of a clean index finger. Picture

Exhale completely through the nostrils and close one nostril. Bring the tip of the index finger with suth, close to the open nostril. Inhale / sniff/ snort the sunth through the nostril in one breath. Release the finger on other nostril and take a few deep breaths.

 

Repeat the same procedure on the other side.

 

After this, you may lie down with a pillow below the shoulders with your head tilted behind. 

Make sure the nose is at 90 degrees to the floor. Keep lying down in this position till burning in the nose settles down.

There might be burning in the nose, forehead, and scalp, sneezing, watering from eyes and nose for a few minutes which is absolutely normal. If little sunth travels to the throat causing irritation spit it out. Spit out any discharge that comes through the mouth.

How does nasya medicine act in the body?

The minute constituents of the inhaled sunth powder is absorbed via the olfactory epithelium 

(nasal mucosa) and gets direct access to bloodstream.

​

The local irritation caused by suth helps in keeping the nasal, paranasal sinuses, and oropharynx clean and clear. It inhibits any unwanted microorganism growth in the sinuses or oropharynx. It improves local blood circulation and lymphatic drainage.

 

Once it crosses the blood-brain barrier, it shows an effect on all over the body.

Caution:

Do not do this procedure for kids under age 8 and elders above 80 years.

Avoid during menstruation, pregnancy, lactation period, immediately after alcohol consumption. Avoid using this if you have a tendency for nasal bleeding and have undergone any recent surgery. For more information please refer to the FAQS section

KAVAL DHARAN

(Oral Intake od Dry Ginger Powder)

What is kaval dharan?

Holding medicinal powder in paste form which can be swished around is called as kavala dharan.

Here we use dry ginger powder( suth ) for kaval dharan.

 

How to do kaval?

Take one fourth tsp of sunth powder in the mouth , allow it to mix with saliva to form paste. Hold for 2 to 3 minutes then swallow the paste. Water can be consumed after a few minutes of this procedure.

 

How it acts?

The paste of sunth gets absorbed through the oral mucosa into the bloodstream and shows immediate local and systemic effect. Sunth paste immediately loosens up phlegm in sinuses , throat and mouth. After swallowing the paste, it acts as a digestive in the stomach.

  3. Reduces anorexia due to excess kapha And vaayu

  4. Causes mental satiety

Anybody above 5 years of age can do this procedure.

For children below 5 years of age sunth powder can be given with jaggery/ honey/ ghee.
