Procedure for Nasya

1. What is Nasya?

Its a part of Ayurvedic Panchakarma procedure through which medicine is administered through the nostril.
2. Which medicines are used in Pradhaman?
-
Many medicinal dry powders are used as a Pradhaman Nasya like Ginger, Black pepper, Vacha, Trikatu, etc... But here, Dry ginger (sunth) powder is preferred for its simplicity and efficacy.
3. Why dry ginger powder?
-
Dry ginger is easily available in every kitchen. It has multiple actions like anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, analgesic, immunomodulatory.
4. How to do Pradhaman Nasya?
-
Take one pinch (whole green moong size) quantity on a finger tip, close one nostril and inhale through the other and repeat it on the other side.

5. Can anyone do Pradhaman Nasya?

6. What is the age limit for this procedure?
-
Generally, it should not be done by a child under the age of 8 years of age and elder above the age of 80 years, but in certain specific conditions, it may be done before 8 or after 80 years of age under the supervision of an Ayurveda Doctor.
7. When should it be done?
-
It should be preferably done in the morning, 15-20 minutes post breakfast and if necessary after evening snacks.
8. For how long should one continue this procedure?
-
Period of Pradhaman Nasya can be decided by the respective Ayurveda Doctor depending on the person's health status.
9. Who should not do the Pradhaman Nasya?
-
During pregnancy, menstruation, uncontrolled hypertension, Nasal bleeding, bleeding tendencies, recent ENT or EYE surgery, any other recent surgeries, certain allergies or any allergy to ginger.
10. What is the difference between dry ginger with lime (chuna) and without lime (chuna)?

Lime coated ginger will cause more burning/irritation in the nostrils.
11. What is expected after Pradhaman Nasya?
-
After Pradhaman Nasya, there may be a little burning in the nose, watering from the eyes, sneezing and some discharge from nose, mouth, or throat is expected for a few minutes. Spit out any discharge.
12. What if burning lasts longer for me?
-
Generally burning in the nose settles down in 5 minutes. But, if it lasts longer than that, then you can apply cow’s ghee in nostrils with a clean little finger.
13. What should I do after doing Pradhaman Nasya?
-
After Pradhaman Nasya, one should lie down with a pillow under the shoulder for 2 to 3 minutes. Spit out any discharge and gargle with preferably warm water.
14. Is there any other way of doing Pradhaman Nasya?

Yes. You can do this by indirect ginger inhalation - Take a fine muslin cloth, put dry ginger powder and make a marble-sized pouch. Place the pouch near nostrils and sniff through it.
15. What other procedure can be done other than Pradhaman Nasya?

Other than Pradhaman Nasya one has to take dry ginger powder paste.
Procedure for Oral Intake of Dry Ginger
1. How to take dry ginger paste?
-
Take 1 gm (i.e. ¼ teaspoon) of dry ginger powder, put it over the tongue, allow it to mix with saliva. After 5-10 minutes, swallow it. Drink water after 10 minutes.
2. Can anyone take dry ginger powder paste?
-
Yes. For children under the age of 10 years, make a paste with jaggery or cow’s ghee and then swallow.
3. Is dry ginger powder hot in nature?
-
Yes, dry ginger is hot till it reaches the stomach. (that is the desired effect against viruses in the mouth and throat) but then it can be taken with cows ghee. After reaching the stomach it is not hot and hence can be taken.
Nasya during Illnesses
1. After Pradhaman Nasya, my nose gets blocked, what to do?

Apply cow’s ghee after Pradhaman Nasya in both the nostrils.
2. If I have Asthma, can I take Pradhaman Nasya?
-
Yes, one can.
3. If I have Hypertension and I am taking medicines for it, can I take Pradhaman Nasya?
-
Yes, if your blood pressure is under control, you can use it.
4. If I have mouth ulcers, can I take Pradhaman Nasya?
-
Yes.
5. If I get excess sleep at night and drowsiness during the day, can I take Pradhamna Nasya?
-
Yes
6. If I get less sleep at night, can I take Pradhaman Nasya?
-
Yes, but it should be followed by 2-4 drops of warm cow's ghee in sleeping position. Please check the video above.
7. Can I take Pradhaman Nasya if I have thyroid imbalance?

'Hypothyroidism' - Yes.

'Hyperthyroidism' - Yes, followed by 2-4 drops of warm cow's ghee in the nostrils
8. Can I take it if I have a migraine?

Yes, followed by 2-4 drops of warm cow's ghee in the nostrils.
9. If I have earache or discharge from ears can I take Pradhaman Nasya?

Yes.
10. If I have hair fall, can I take Pradhaman Nasya?

Yes, followed by 2-4 drops of warm cow's ghee in the nostrils.
Oral Intake of Dry Ginger during Illnesses
1. If I have dryness of mouth how should I use dry ginger powder?

Mix the dry ginger powder with cow’s ghee and take it as explained above.
2. If I have acidity/mouth ulcer/stomach ulcer, can I take Dry ginger paste?
-
Yes. It can be taken with jaggery/sugar and cow’s ghee. With stomach ulcer, it should be taken under supervision.
3. If I have constipation, can I take Dry ginger paste?
-
Yes, you can mix it with cow’s ghee and take it.
4. If I’m on any allopathic medicines can I take dry ginger powder?
-
Yes, preferably after 30 mins. It is preferably taken with jaggery and cows ghee under supervision
5. I’m taking cetirizine for my allergy, can I take Dry ginger powder?

Yes.
6. If I take ginger, my periods come early. Can I take it?
-
Yes, it can be taken with cow’s ghee.
7. If I have piles can I take ginger powder paste?
-
Yes, it can be taken with fresh buttermilk.
8. Can I take ginger powder if I have diabetes?
-
Yes, check sugar levels periodically and adjust the dose of anti-diabetic medicine if required.
9. Can I take ginger powder if I have heavy menses?
-
It may be taken under supervision with cows ghee.
